Short version (3 min.)
“Those girls were so happy to see they could earn money thanks to their efforts”
From a young age, María José Baños dreamed of making the world better. However, her life changed radically when she arrived in India and faced the harsh reality of extreme poverty that was ever-present the streets.
In her mission to help, María José was not alone. Thanks to the support of generous foundations, she was able to start several life-changing projects. One of the most significant programs was for young women from poor and illiterate families. For a year, these women learned sewing and tailoring, and upon completing their training, they had the opportunity to design and sell their traditional costumes and wedding dresses in neighboring villages. “Those girls were so happy to see that they could earn some money thanks to their efforts,” María José comments, highlighting how this project provided them with the possibility of economic independence and a profound sense of self-esteem.
María José estimates that, in India alone, they have managed to help more than 5,000 people. She emphasizes the professionalism and constant support of the foundations in advising and monitoring these projects.
Although María José never personally met Luis Valls, she later discovered that he had been the benefactor behind the scholarship that allowed her to study in the United States. Her gratitude towards Luis is immense, since that opportunity not only provided her with an education but also gave her the tools to continue helping others.
María José’s journey is a testament to the importance of appreciating people and their ability to make a difference. Her story inspires us to recognize the impact that our actions can have on the lives of others, reminding us that, with effort and support, realities can be transformed.
